Tessellating Tiles

Our after-school class has been busy creating stunning ceramic tiles this term, and the results are fantastic!

The children began by sketching their designs on paper before rolling out the clay, using guides to ensure an even thickness.

Next came the exciting part - adding shapes, textures, and patterns to bring each tile to life.

Their dedication paid off - a beautiful collection of tessellating tiles emerged from the kiln, perfectly fired and crack-free. Well done, everyone!

Now the focus was on decoration. With a wonderful sense of calm and concentration, the children carefully applied vibrant underglazes, experimenting with colour and detail.

In our latest sessions, we added the finishing touches, glazing the bisque-fired tiles with a quick dip in a transparent glaze. After a final night in the kiln, the colours truly came to life, rich and glossy.

Finally, with all the tiles glazed and ready to go home, I can’t help but admire each unique creation. If I had to pick a favourite, it would be this little treasure made by an 11-year-old - I just love those ducks!
