Patterned Plates
A Pottery Project Full of Patterns and Precision
In January, our after-school classes resumed at the studio with an exciting project - designing unique patterns to transfer onto clay tiles and plates. The children dove right into the creative process, experimenting with different shapes, colors, and designs, each one eager to make their own mark. The designs were transferred onto plates, and the students began to learn the importance of balance and proportion, setting the foundation for their next steps.
Once the designs were finalized, the next phase involved rolling out the clay and cutting circles, a key step in shaping the plates. The children learned the significance of accuracy as they carefully measured and cut each circle and the individual elements to create perfect, uniform pieces. The challenge of repetition helped them refine their focus and skill, while a sense of symmetry began to take shape in each plate.
The plates, rolled and shaped, were left to dry, ready for the next stage of firing - after which the colourful glazes could be added!
By the time half term arrived, the children’s plates were ready to be fired in the kiln. This beautiful collection of plates was not just a visual achievement but a learning experience that integrated geometry, symmetry, and precision with the hands-on practice of hand-building, painting, and glazing. The children not only enjoyed the creative freedom of the project but also gained an understanding of the practical skills involved in pottery. From measuring circles to reflecting on their design choices, they learned valuable lessons in mathematics and craftsmanship along the way.
The end result was a gorgeous range of decorative plates that demonstrated the breadth of creativity and skills these students had developed. From drawing and design to hand-building and glazing, each child had the opportunity to explore their individual artistic expression. With a beautiful collection of finished plates to take home, the project was a wonderful success, leaving everyone with a sense of pride and accomplishment.
