Cities from Clay
This term at Hags Pottery after-school classes, we embarked on an exciting journey - designing and creating miniature buildings from clay.
Sketching, Planning, and Cutting
We began by sketching our ideas and transforming them into card templates.
Using these as guides, we rolled out slabs of clay, carefully cut out our shapes, and prepared all the pieces needed for construction.
Constructing the Buildings
With their clay pieces ready, the children started assembling their buildings, joining the slabs together to form unique little structures. Slowly but surely, our little clay city began to rise!
Preparing for the First Firing
Over the next sessions, the children continued refining their buildings, adding architecturall details and personal touches. Their creativity and focus were incredible to watch! Our first batch of buildings was ready for the kiln - each one full of personality. Well done, little potters! I love them all!
Designing with Colour - Decorating and Glazing
With the bisque-fired buildings in hand, we turned our attention to colour.
The children used their beautiful watercolour paintings as inspiration, selecting glazes and coloured oxides to bring their creations to life.
The final touches were added as the children carefully applied glazes and oxides, enhancing the textures and details of their ceramic houses. Watching their designs transform through colour was magical!
The Final Reveal
Fresh from the kiln, the finished ceramic houses look absolutely stunning!
Every piece is full of character, making this project a huge success. Before they go home, we’ll take some time to admire, play, and have fun with our wonderful clay city.
