Animation Station (for Wimbledon Bookfest) - Day 1

Saturday, 7th October 2017

For the third year running Children’s Art School have partnered with Wimbledon Bookfest to run a book related art course as part of their 10 day festival on Wimbledon Common. We have run Illustration, Zine Making courses and this year saw the return of the popular Animation Station.

Artist and Illustrator Amy Pennington introduced the children to various types of animation to kick of Day 1. We then discussed the principles of animation through making a simple flick book.

We then practiced using the i-motion app using our bodies, and little toys, and got busy with the plasticine to make characters.

We joined together in groups and began to make the characters interact.

Amy showed us how to storyboard our ideas into a short sequence. We then started to make simple backdrops for our scenes using boxes and stiff card. Simple line drawings created a bold backdrop,

We were then ready to start filming. We had to be careful to get the whole scene in each shot and keep the iPad still. And to keep our fingers out of the way in-between shots.

We used speech bubbles to liven up the scenes and add dialogue. When we had completed short sequences we all watched each others films and discussed what went well.
