Thinking in Three Dimensions - Day 1
Wednesday 12th April 2017
This Easter holiday we have been Thinking in Three Dimensions with artist Abigail Hunt.
Our two day sculpture course warmed up with a round of ‘Kims’ Game’.
Children had to memorise and draw selected three dimensional objects after they were covered over.
Abigail showed the children a wide variety of sculptures and installations to give them inspiration.
They then brainstormed ideas of what they would like to make on a long piece of paper.
We discussed abstract and representational sculpture, and thought abut how to make other people’s ideas our own.
We then made a quick sculpture using just blu-tac and paperclips. These tiny sculptures were ingenious and beautiful.
We then went back to our drawings and used wire to translate 2-dimensions into 3 dimensions.
We hung the wire drawings in the air.
The next activity involved joining triangular shapes together to make three dimensional objects.
We began working alone with tape and slits to experiment with structures that grew and changed shape.
We then joined together with a partner and morphed two structures together
They grew and changed. As they got bigger we had to work to make them more stable. Coloured tape added another interesting element.
They began to look like strange buildings and architectural models. We could imagine tiny people moving around inside!
We had our lunch in the local park and collected some natural elements that we would draw later on.
After lunch we launched into a ‘Free Making’ session. We laid out a variety of materials for the children to select from, and off they went!
They built big and small - Experimented with clay - Joined different materials - Created abstract sculptures - And representational ones - Some were quite technical
We then worked on a quiet drawing activity. We had to ‘scale up’ a drawing of a found object and create a big image of something tiny. We used magnifying glasses to help us look closely.
Our final activity was to create a sculpture from bricks, matchboxes and stones. We loved using the glue guns to stick things together. We will paint these tomorrow.
The children then designed a postcard invitation for our exhibition tomorrow – They can’t wait to show off their work!

Wow. I loved all your ideas, it looks as though you all had a fantastic time, I wish I had had the opportunity to explore so much about shape and structure when I was your age. Enjoy your art, you should all be very proud of yourselves.

Thanks for these wonderful photos.
By all accounts the boys had a fantastic day! They even went to bed voluntarily early on a school holiday night so that they wouldn’t be tired for day 2 !
Can’t wait to see what they get up to tomorrow.
