Cut-Up and Re-Build Christmas - Day 1
Artist Abigail Hunt has been leading our two day Christmas art course for children, supported by Sabrina Smith Noble who has adapted activities for younger children.
We have been investigating the limitless possibilities of paper for decoration, sculpture, collage and problem solving, sometimes with a curious Christmas twist.
We began the day by stretching our imaginations to see what we could do with just one piece of paper and our hands… nothing else…
Folding … Tearing … Jigsaws … Joining … Ice creams … Paperchains … Sculptures.
We then split into two groups.
Younger children started off making simple hanging paper decorations.
Whilst older children used old books learning folding techniques to make beautiful sculptures that can stand or hang.
Each page must be methodically folded. We used different techniques to create different effects. It kept us quiet for a while!
We used a glue gun to join the back and front cover.
Don’t they look stunning.
We then used a match box to create tiny worlds using pop up and collage techniques.
We had to really concentrate to work on a tiny scale. Good fine motor skill practice!
As you open the box, a surprise pops out!
We experimented with layers.
The younger children filled their match box with a pop up christmas surprise. So don’t throw that boring white box in the bin… !
In the afternoon we all came together for our TOO BIG CHALLENGE.
In teams of four, we were given the challenge to build a structure that we could all fit inside.
We had limited materials and tokens to ‘buy’ more materials… so we had to think hard about what we really needed.
Planning and thinking…
It had to be strong… we were working as a team!
We could make our structure attractive to look at.
What would we spend our tokens on? Is it a ship? A castle? Who cares! It was so much fun!!
